Worms!

We harvested casting (fertilizer/poop) from our worm bin. The chickens were excited. We also made liquid fertilizer from the gross juice that collects below the worm bin. You dilute the grossness 10:1. It looks like delicious dark beer and smells like satan.

Time to harvest the worm castings again.
We have a wonderful worm bin that composts all of our kitchen scraps with out any of the usual turning and watering and fussing that our regular compost requires.

This tray is fully decomposed and ready to go on the garden. But what else is in there? A family of slugs! Luckily our chickens have learned to like slugs.

For a fertilizer boost for our plants we drain off the liquid from the bottom of the worm bin, add 9 parts water and give it to our plants.

We got more worm castings today for a bed we are preparing. The chickens love the crumbled eggshell in the worm bin - a habit that I do not like to encourage. We also found a family of slugs in the bin which the chickens were uninterested in. Why not ladies? Worms yes, slugs no?














Here are more perennial peppers. The plant may not be able to perennial after all, it seems to have been damaged in the frost we had. We'll see. The peppers are delicious- surprisingly spicy.

I love our red wrigglers. They take our kitchen scraps and nothing else and turn them into this wonderful compost. I was preparing a new garden bed this evening after work and the bottom tray of our wiggly ranch was all broken down and ready to be used. It is so beautiful!
