Daily Swarm

Our bees keep swarming!
Here is Jonathan wearing my tiny bee keeping gloves and successfully catching the swarm you see there dangling from the bush.
Unfortunately the bees left the box after a few hours, and weren't able to be picked up by a new bee keeper.

Garden Photo

Here we are, starting to transition to the summer garden! We just moved the chickens to the garden bed where all of the broccoli has gone to seed, and put in tomatoes where the chickens used to be. The favas that have been growing all winter are front ant center.

Daily Dinner

Salad: fava beans, arugula, mint, oregano, sage, and garlic greens from the garden + olives, mozerella, artichoke hearts, and the sprouts Kate made from mung beans following the instructions from a hippy garden zine.

Quinoa: with backyard honey, avocado leaf + mushrooms, onions, saffron.

Backyard Birds

A pair of tufted titmice is nesting in our birdhouse. The last two springs we've had chickadees raise families there. The titmice babies hatched a couple of days ago and we hear them peeping, especially right after a parent bird pops into the bird house with a little bug in its beak. What a great present this birdhouse is. Thanks, Mama!

Also, yesterday I three or four cedar waxwings in the avocado tree- a new kind of backyard bird!

Swarming Bees

These bees swarmed from our hive. I caught them in a cardboard box and was inordinately proud of myself.
